WHERE ARE WE?
We are in the United States and in the state of Missouri. Missouri is a central Midwestern state which lies near the geographic center of the United States. The state of Missouri is one of the two states in the nation touched by eight states. Missouri is bordered by Iowa to the north; Arkansas to the south; Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee on the east; and Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma on the west. Missouri ranks 19th in size with a total area of 69,674 square miles. The city of Rolla is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis, 110 miles northeast of Springfield and about 70 miles south of Jefferson City, the state capital. The city of Rolla is located in Phelps County at the junction of I-44, U.S. 63 and MO Hwy. 72. It is located at the foothills of the Ozarks at an elevation of about 1,100 feet. The greater Rolla area has about 22,000 people. Rolla is the home of the University of Missouri-Rolla. The campus is located in the northern part of the city. As Missouri's technological university, the University of Missouri-Rolla's mission is to educate tomorrow's leaders in engineering and science. The University of Missouri-Rolla, UMR, has a major responsibility for meeting Missouri's and the Nation's needs for engineering education. UMR offers programs that include a full range of engineering and science degrees and complementary liberal arts degrees and programs. UMR conducts research to advance knowledge, to provide essential support for graduate education, and to enhance undergraduate education. There is special emphasis on research in materials science and engineering, manufacturing, geothechnical engineering, and environmental science and technology. The UMR campus encompasses about 284 acres and combines both old and new architecture. The Nuclear Engineering Program is located in Fulton Hall. The Nuclear Engineering Program is located in Fulton Hall on the campus of UMR. Our Nuclear Engineering program began in 1958, and UMR is the only school in Missouri offering an undergraduate degree in nuclear engineering. Our student/faculty ratio is about 10 to 1, which helps us maintain personal contact between students and faculty. Nuclear Engineering tours can be part of any campus visit.
